When the job takes your Makita tool into harsh conditions, Makita Extreme Protection Technology (XPT™) provides added protection. When you slide a Makita 18V LXT® battery with the STAR symbol onto a Makita tool that has either the STAR symbol or a yellow terminal, you are benefitting from STAR Protection Computer Controls™. At that time the user can either restart the tool, change or charge the battery, and put the tool back to work. If STAR detects conditions that threaten to overload, overdischarge or overheat the tool or battery, the tool will automatically stop. STAR is communications technology that monitors conditions during use, allowing the tool and battery to exchange data to protect against overloading, overdischarging and overheating. Makita cordless tools are engineered for industrial applications, and for added protection during the most demanding jobs Makita created STAR Protection Computer Controls™. With high amp-hour batteries, efficient brushed and brushless motors, and 36V (18V X2) LXT® technology, Makita 18V LXT® tools not only meet corded demands, they can exceed the performance of corded, all while remaining in a single cordless platform powered by the industry's fastest-charging 18V lithium-ion batteries. Makita’s leading technology gives tool users unmatched performance and breadth of line, with innovation in motor and battery technology that is obliterating industry standards – and leaving old thinking behind. Makita created the 18V Lithium-Ion cordless tool category in 2005, and today it is the world’s largest 18V cordless tool line-up. For most lawns under a 1/2-acre, it’s very possible to get your trimming and blowing done on one battery.Tool users who unplug the cord with Makita 18V LXT® experience new levels of convenience, efficiency and productivity. Most brands pack their trimmer kits with a 2.0Ah or 2.5Ah battery, giving you more capacity. The inclusion of that 4.0Ah battery is worth noting. Hart also includes an impressive 5-year warranty for residential use. You can pick up the Hart 40V battery string trimmer, along with the 4.0Ah battery and charger, for $194. The trade-off here is that it doesn’t provide the best visibility for edging applications, but Hart has an edging attachment that’s much faster than using the trimmer head. The guard on the Hart 40V brushless string trimmer employs a wider design, which protects you better from rogue lawn shrapnel than narrower sizes. Simply line up the arrows on the trimmer head, insert the line, pull it through to the halfway point, and ratchet it back to a usable length. Manufacturers have all seemingly found a way to take the hassle out of loading string into the head. That said, each attachment you install is going to change the balance point. In the long run, this helps you avoid arm fatigue. Instead, they provide an easy counterbalance for the lightweight head. This trimmer does feel a little back-heavy, but the motor and battery really aren’t trying to swan-dive into the grass. In this case, however, it’s not too big of a deal.
